Zero Carbon Commuting Conference – 31 October 2022 https://www.edie.net/event/zero-carbon-commuting-conference-31-october-2022/ Tue, 11 Oct 2022 09:26:52 +0000 https://www.edie.net/?post_type=event&p=121823 What is ZC3?

Now in it’s second year, Zero Carbon Commuting Conference (ZC3), the UK’s only event focussed on decarbonising the commute, is behind held virtually on the 31st of October. ZC3 is focussed on sharing best practice amongst leaders from the UK’s largest public and private employers. In attendance will be representation from over 600 of the UK’s largest employers represented, with sustainability, transport, estate and HR functions attending.

With over 40 speakers from across industry, government and academia, ZC3 will include topics such as:

  • Transferable Lessons from Decarbonising Supply Chains
  • LAs and Anchor Institutions Decarbonising the Commute Together
  • How does the energy and fuel crisis affect sustainable commuting?
  • Rural and Urban Innovation and Impact
  • Changing commuting behaviour: psychological insights

Why focus on the commute?

Shockingly, 5% of all UK emissions come from commuting. In July 2021, the Department for Transport released the Transport Decarbonisation Plan. For the first time in UK Government policy, it identified that the commute should have a decarbonisation strategy distinct from transport as a whole. The DfT named this policy “Commute Zero”.

The movement to decarbonise the commute is part of wider “scope 3” set of emissions which require businesses to take account of their entire “value chain”. Commuting is a unique kind of journey. Workers commute “off their own steam” – they choose how they are going to get to work and pay for it themselves. However, unlike any other sort of travel, they are required to make the journey for their employment. So whilst the commute is a personal journey, it’s one that employers can influence.

ZC3 is an opportunity to address the challenges and solutions around travelling to and from the workplace. By supporting large employers across the public and private sector, we hope to help organisations address their Scope 3 commuter emissions challenges, improve the viability of sustainable commuting alternatives and mitigate the impacts of climate change to make happier, stress-less commutes for all.
