‘Green’ labels flag up fuel efficient vehicles

A substantial reduction in traffic emissions is seen as a key element in tackling global warming. Government and industry are combining forces to promote more environmentally sustainable vehicles and fuels, with a Cleaner Vehicle Labelling Scheme the latest joint initiative. Onyx Group opts for BMI ejector trailers

Waste management contractor, Onyx Group, has taken delivery of its first trailers from BMI of Dungannon, Co Tyrone. The 15 ejector trailers, designed for enhanced on-site and on-road safety, are in use on a high-profile contract with the London Borough of Bromley, while a further two are on order to service the group's contracts with Tysley Waste Disposal in Birmingham and Onyx South Downs at Eastbourne.

Portable MBR technology extends leachate treatment options

Tony Robinson, Operations Manager of Wehrle Environmental, puts forward the case that new regulations and the mounting costs of landfill may prompt operators to take a fresh look at current practices. Wehrle has over 15 years of experience of working with European and Asian landfill companies. The company's plants have been installed on over 58 landfill sites throughout the world and treat over 10,000 m3/day of leachate. Wehrle designs and builds leachate treatment plants and also operates them on behalf of its customers.

Affordable remote monitoring set for take off

Remote monitoring is an idea that has been long talked about - but according to Chris Dakin, founder and Managing Director of Gas Data, the waiting is over. He claims that the technology has finally arrived - at the right cost. Gas Data is already providing remote monitoring for a European company which has invested in the management of a major landfill site in South America. This provides data that is environmentally, technically and commercially beneficial as "Carbon Credits" are eagerly sought under the Kyoto Protocol.

High performance standards boost accreditation

Achieving high standards of management is a priority across the environmental and waste management sectors, in both the public and private arenas. Local authorities and commercial businesses keep a wary eye on their perceived image, often reflected in how they rate in terms of attaining ISO certification, EMS and EMAS, and, more particularly in LAs, by how many stars they gain under inspection by the Audit Commission.
