Government to spend over £2 million on bicycle projects

Scotland to recycle 25%

Scottish local authorities are to recycle 25% of municipal waste by 2006, with more than £170 million committed to increasing composting and recycling fourfold from the current 6%, the Scottish Executive has announced.

Volunteers don pollution detectors

Two thousand people will be wearing detectors as the EU launches its PEOPLE programme to monitor air pollution in large European cities. Steel packaging recycling exceeds targets by nearly four times

In 2001, 1.9 million tonnes of steel packaging were recycled in Europe, around 55% of the total produced, three times the target for the year, and an increase of 15% from the previous year. Europe now recycles ten times more steel packaging than it did a decade ago.
