Climate Change Levy: are you ready for lift-off?

Average global temperatures are rising, as are sea levels; habitats are changing, and vulnerable species are being lost, and it’s all due to a group of gases that are turning Planet Earth into a greenhouse. In the UK, where climate change is causing warmer winters, and a wetter climate throughout the year, a new consequence of global warming will come into effect on 1st April: the Climate Change Levy.

Just deserts

Over the course of the next decade, the United Arab Emirates alone will invest some $46bn in projects related to the environment. The Abu Dhabi Declaration - a framework for sustainable use of resources in the Arab region in the 21st century - was last month endorsed by the Conference of Arab Environment Ministers, a declaration underlined by Environment 2001, the first major environmental exhibition and conference ever to be held in the region. Matt MacAllan was there.

Emissions trading: the implications for industry

Next month will see the launch of an emissions trading scheme as part of a range of measures designed to help the UK meet its commitments on greenhouse gas reductions. Likely participants fall into two categories: those who are part of a Climate Change Levy Agreement, and those who are not. William Blyth, climate change consultant for Cirrus, the strategy practice of AEA Technology Environment, looks at the issues facing both camps.

PM10 monitoring for industrial sites

As today's regulations on dust are getting stronger due to the UK Air Quality Strategy moving into the latter stages of review, industrial sites are under more and more pressure to carry out real time dust measurements.

Carbon cuts chemical release

Hickson & Welch specialise in difficult chemistry, producing multipurpose fine organic chemical intermediates in a variety of multistage chemical reactions. These include nitrations, chlorinations, hydrogenation, phosgenation and similar types of complex reactions in 16 chemical production facilities at its Castleford site.

Fume abatement galvanised

Working with local Environment Agency officers, Scaffolding manufacturer SGB Manufacturing required a solution for the efficient filtering of white clouds of fine fume generated when components are dipped during a hot dip galvanising process. MikroPul Ltd worked in partnership with SGB to develop a purpose-built low top removal Mikropulsaire dust collector and turnkey package that included fan, stack, duct, electrics and builder's works for the company's Coseley, West Midlands site. The system is rated at 20,000m3/hr to achieve the requested performance of the existing hot dip galvanising enclosure.

For whom the smell tolls

The application of advanced control technologies to mitigate odorous emissions has been limited, largely because odour has not been regarded as a major environmental hazard or health risk. However, as the public easily identifies odours, many perceive a risk to exist. Martin Key and Mohit Uberoi of Megtec, an air pollution specialist exhibiting at this year's ET2001 exhibition, review the nature and causes of odours and offer some control and management options.

Sharing expertise in an increasingly unstable world

It’s a sad fact the that the first two months of the 21st Century have not heralded a new dawn, but have ushered in stormy weather - both literally and metaphorically. Shifting land masses have brought death and destruction in Gujarat and El Salvador. Mozambique is once again struggling for survival against the floodwaters of the mighty Zambezi river, and across the world political tensions and instabilities continue to make headlines.
