For our fourth episode of the series – recorded from edie’s HQ in West Sussex – Luke, Matt and Sarah serve up three interviews, all connected by a jargon-busting theme.
We begin with a two-minute Net-Zero Jargon Buster – breaking down the need-to-know decarbonisation terms that have emerged over the past couple of years – before Matt speaks to Interface’s head of sustainability (EAAA) Jon Khoo to discuss the flooring manufacturer’s carbon-neutral aims.
Next, to mark Veganuary, Luke sits down with the Plant-based Food Alliance UK’s chief executive Marisa Heath who shares some eye-opening statistics about the environmental benefits of going meat-free and provides a clear call-to-action for the Government.
And last but not least, Sarah pays a visit to a pop-up regenerative fashion hub in Stratford, London, organised by The Textiles Circularity Centre at the Royal College of Art (RCA). There, she speaks with the RCA’s director of the Materials Science Research Centre Professor Sharon Baurley, who discusses what it will take to transition to a circular fashion economy.
And of course, no episode of Sustainability Uncovered would be complete without some sustainability small talk. The episode also sees the edie trio share their New Year’s Resolutions along with some film and TV suggestions to see you through the winter.

]]>This latest #SustyTalk episode, hosted as part of our ongoing Engagement Week 2023 (23 – 27 January), sees edie’s senior reporter Sarah George in discussion with Hubbub’s chief executive Alex Robinson. Hubbub is a UK-based environmental charity specialising in initiatives that help drive more sustainable behaviours and lifestyles among the general public, including hosting ‘ballot bins’ for cigarette butts and cans, operating a nationwide network of community fridges and working with Starbucks to promote reusable cup use, to name just three.
Robinson took over as Hubbub’s chief executive last year. He is on hand in this #SustyTalk to discuss his “scenic route” into behaviour change for sustainability and outline Hubbub’s focus topics for 2023 and beyond, which have been chosen not only with impact in mind, but with the need to save people money amid the rising cost-of-living.
Robinson also shares instances where communications campaigns have gone well and where they could have been better, providing learnings for listeners looking to launch or refresh their own initiatives.
Robinson says: “We often haven’t led with the environmental message, because if you lead with [this] message, you speak to people who already care. That’s valuable, for sure. But if you want to bring new people in and change their behaviours, you have to talk to people about things they care about.
“Now, more than ever, they care about saving money. But this is one of a number of drivers out there that aren’t about the environment, that can inspire more environmentall friendly behaviours. These can be spending time with family, or being healthier, for example.”

]]>Now, #SustyTalk is evolving from a video format to an audio-only format. This episode sees edie’s senior reporter Sarah George in discussion with Premier Foods’ ESG director Nick Brown. Long-time edie readers may have met Nick, or read one of our interviews with him, in his previous role at Coca-Cola Europacific Partners.
A little over a year into his time at Premier Foods, which owns brands including Mr Kipling and OXO, Nick reflects on the development and implementation of the business’s new ‘Enriching Life’ strategy. The 2030 strategy includes (to name but a few targets) a net-zero ambition supported by 1.5C-aligned science-based climate targets; an ambition to donate at least one million meals each year; a commitment to end deforestation in the supply chain and growth plans for plant-based foods.
Nick is on hand to provide learnings on conducting materiality assessments, setting science-based targets, aligning with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), forging meaningful partnerships, and more, in our last SustyTalk of 2022.

Now, #SustyTalk is evolving from a video format to an audio-only format. This episode sees edie’s senior reporter Sarah George in discussion with Ashden’s head of awards Dr Stephen Hall. This episode has been recorded to coincide with the ongoing negotiations in Montreal, Canada, for the UN’s global biodiversity treaty.
After a round of introductions, Stephen provides his reflections on Ashden’s time at COP27, including the discussions around nature and the whole day in the Presidency Agenda dedicated to solutions.
He also runs over the climate charity’s key asks for negotiators at the UN’s 15th biodiversity COP, which is ongoing in Montreal right now. Attendees are attempting to agree on a global treaty for nature that would halt degradation and bring about restoration at scale, but the process hangs in the balance ahead of the arrival of ministers this weekend.
Ashden is supporting a strong mission statement, in recognition that this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to end biodiversity loss. This should be underpinned by time-bound, numerical, science-based targets that nations are held accountable for. Ashden also wants to see a strong agreement on scaling international biodiversity finance from the Global North to locally-led action in the Global South.
Stephen is on hand to spotlight some of these locally-led, innovative solutions from communities most affected by climate change and nature loss – including Indigenous communities. Ashden award-winners include YICE, based in in Uganda, a regenerative agriculture programme which provides training to local people and refugees in organic agriculture techniques.

]]>Now, #SustyTalk is evolving from a video format to an audio-only format. This episode sees edie’s senior reporter Sarah George in discussion with healthcare giant Bupa’s group director of sustainability Glyn Richards. This episode was recorded in late November, with Glyn fresh from his trip to Sharm El Sheikh as part of the sector’s work to engage with attendees at COP27.
Glyn is on hand to recap on Bupa’s own plans to reach net-zero across its value chain by 2040. The target was set in late 2021, through the business’s membership of the UN’s Race to Zero initiative, and was built upon this year with the approval of interim emissions targets in line with 1.5C by the Science-Based Targets initiative. Bupa is one of 64 healthcare organisations participating in the Race to Zero.
He also emphsises that reducing the environmental impact of the healthcare sector, particularly its climate impact, is only one part of the role the sector can play in creating a sustainable future. There is also a role for delivering regenerative impact and engaging with policymakers.
The sector has become increasingly vocal in recent months about the impact of climate change and nature loss on human health, advocating for joined-up policymaking that covers all of these topics. COP27 saw events hosted by bodies including the Climate and Health Coalition, Health Care Without Harm and the new Alliance on Transformative Action Climate and Health. The World Health Organisation (WHO) serves as the secretariat for this latter initiative.

]]>Now, #SustyTalk is evolving from a video format to an audio-only format. This episode sees edie’s senior reporter Sarah George in discussion with packaging giant Ball Corporation’s vice president and chief sustainability officer Ramon Arratia. This episode has been recorded as part of edie’s month-long Net-Zero November editorial campaign which is running until Wednesday (30 November).
Ramon is on hand to reflect on Climate Week NYC 2022, including the collaborative work from the aluminum arm of the First Movers Coalition. Launched last year in a joint effort overseen by the World Economic Forum and US Climate Envoy John Kerry, the Coalition brings together corporates across the value chains of hard-to-abate, high-emission sectors to help scale innovative technologies and processes to drive deep decarbonisation.
Ramon also argues the case for companies to adopt circular economy principles as they work towards newly ambitious climate targets including long-term net-zero, outlining why he believes most will need to rethink their products and processes to deliver the transformative change needed.

]]>For our second episode of the series – recorded from edie’s podcast studio in West Sussex – Luke Nicholls, Matt Mace and Sarah George begin by reflecting on the COP27 climate summit in Sharm El Sheikh, including a live video call with Nicholas Dunlop, co-founder and secretary-general of Climate Parliament – an international network of legislators working to combat climate change.
Then, Sarah takes the podcasting reigns with two interview segments. First, she heads to a climate café – a new concept set up by youth activist organisation Force of Nature to provide safe spaces for people to discuss how they feel about the climate crisis. Sarah sits down in the flagship café set within the Natural History Museum, for a chat with Force of Nature founder Clover Hogan and one of the Museum’s data scientists Adriana De Palma.
Finally, Sarah heads off to Camden Town Brewery to talk hydrogen and net-zero. There, she meets Chris Jackson, chief executive of UK-based green hydrogen firm Protium, and Yleni De Neve, sustainability lead (Europe) at AB InBev. The drinks manufacturer has partnered with Protium to decarbonise its Budweiser brewery in South Wales – the first and largest brewery in the UK to use green hydrogen solutions.
And of course, no episode of the edie podcast would be complete without some fun and games. The episode closes out with the second part of our fiercely competitive “Top of the COPs” quiz – can Matt even up the score following Luke’s victory in episode 1?
