Resources & Waste Strategy: edie publishes concise business guide to Government document

The guide is bookended by an insightful foreword from Green Alliance's Libby Peake

The guide condenses Defra’s 146-page policy plan into a 21-page explainer which analyses the need-to-know elements of the Strategy – from the “polluter pays” principle and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) systems, through to the much-heralded plans for a deposit-return scheme for single-use plastic bottles.

Sponsored by Helistrat, the guide provides edie readers with a more focused view of the business-critical elements of the Government document, and outlines what business leadership looks like in relation to it.

It begins with a report foreword from Green Alliance’s Libby Peake, who stresses the opportunities for business to capitalise on the momentum created by the Strategy and supporting policies.

“We’ve often heard that using resources more wisely is good for the business bottom-line, but all too often it has proved difficult to realise savings in the absence of the right Government framework,” Peake writes. “The recent outputs from Defra and the Treasury show that change is coming. Companies that act now will put themselves in the best position to prosper in the promised resource efficient future.”

The guide is structured around eight key elements of the Resources & Waste Strategy; providing an at-a-glance summary of new legislation, key facts and stats, best-practice case studies and advice for businesses looking to ramp up action in each of the eight areas.

It concludes with an industry viewpoint penned by Helistrat chief executive and divisional director of Reconomy, Harvey Laud, who discusses the key outcomes from a recent edie roundtable discussion about the business implications of the Strategy.

Laud writes: “The Resources & Waste Strategy has the potential to bring about real change and to play an important role in helping develop a more circular economy. For this to happen, we are going to need wide-ranging collaboration across Government, manufacturing, retail, waste management and society as a whole.”
