DEFINITION: A mechanism introduced by the UK Government to ensure that electricity supply continues to meet demand as more volatile and unpredictable renewable energy generation comes online. The Capacity Market provides a regular payment to reliable forms of energy capacity in return for such capacity being available when the system is tight.
