Decentralised energy

DEFINITION: Energy that is generated close to where it will be used, rather than at an industrial plant and sent through the national grid. Decentralised systems typically use renewable energy sources, including small hydro, combined heat and power (CHP), biomass, solar and wind power. A decentralised energy system can increase security of supply, reduce transmission losses and lowers carbon emissions.
