Net energy

DEFINITION: The energy available for work (economic growth) once the energy used to obtain a given energy has been taken into account, expressed as a ratio. For example, fracking has a net energy of 5:1. One unit of energy is used for every 5 units obtained by the process of obtaining the energy.
