Peatland

DEFINITION: Peatland is land which has a naturally accumulated layer of ‘peat’ (organic material such as plants or mosses) at its surface. Peat bogs cover approximately 2-3% of the Earth’s surface and act as an important carbon sink, containing more stored carbon than all of the planet’s forests. Damaged peatlands are a major source of global carbon emissions, and peatland restoration can therefore generate significant emissions reductions.
